Many surgical procedures require psychological clearance before the surgical team will proceed. The evaluation is not about gatekeeping. It is about making sure you are psychologically prepared for what is ahead, that you have the supports in place to recover well, and that any underlying mental-health considerations are accounted for.
At The Therapy Lounge, our pre-op evaluations are warm, structured, and respectful. You will not feel judged. You will feel seen and informed.
How the evaluation works
Reach out
Use our consult call or email to confirm we can support what your surgical team requires. We will ask what type of evaluation is needed and what your surgeon’s timeline looks like.
Evaluation session(s)
Typically one to two 50-minute sessions, online. We cover your history, current functioning, support system, and the specific psychological factors relevant to your surgery.
Written report
We provide a clear written report addressing your surgical team’s requirements. We send it directly to the team or to you, depending on what they request.
Follow-up if needed
Some surgical teams request a brief follow-up after surgery. We can provide that. Some clients also choose to start ongoing therapy after the evaluation; we are happy to support that or refer.
Important note about your specific surgery
Different surgical procedures and different surgical teams have different evaluation requirements. Before you book, please reach out so we can confirm that what we offer meets what your surgeon needs. We will walk through this with you on a brief call before you commit to anything.

Frequently asked questions
-
How quickly can the evaluation be completed?
It depends on scheduling and what your surgical team requires. Reach out as early as possible — ideally a few weeks before your surgery date — so we can plan accordingly.
-
What does the evaluation cover?
A psychological evaluation typically reviews your mental-health history, current functioning, support system, expectations about the surgery, and any factors specific to the procedure your surgeon has flagged.
-
Will I "fail" if I disclose anxiety or depression?
No. Most people seeking elective surgery have some mental-health history. The evaluation is not a pass/fail test — it is a thorough assessment that helps your surgical team understand the full clinical picture and supports your post-surgical recovery.
-
Will my surgeon get a copy of the report?
Yes, with your consent. We provide a written report addressing the specific requirements your surgical team has outlined. You can also receive a copy.
-
What if you cannot do the type of evaluation my surgeon needs?
Reach out before booking. We will confirm whether what we offer matches what your surgical team requires. If we are not the right fit, we will help you find a clinician who is.
-
How much does the evaluation cost?
Evaluations start at $150 per session. Total cost depends on how many sessions are needed and what your surgeon’s requirements are. The simplest way to get a clear answer is to reach out.
